Presentation Topic: Managing Risk: From Infrastructure to the Pandemic

Abstract: Mr. Stein served as the Principal Investigator for a National Academies study to develop guidelines for risk-based management of bridges with unknown foundations.  This talk will discuss general risk management considerations and highlight differences and similarities between infrastructure risk management and pandemic risk management.

Speaker Bio: Mr. Stein is President of GKY, a Virginia-based water resources engineering, policy, and planning consulting firm with offices in Chantilly, Richmond, and Newport News.  He served as Principal Investigator at the Federal Highway Administration’s Hydraulics Research Laboratory for over 10 years, directing physical and numerical (1-D, 2-D, 3-D, and CFD) studies to assist with development of hydraulic design equations and coefficients and also to support site-specific designs.  He also taught hydrology and hydraulics modeling courses to DOTs throughout the United States.  GKY is currently working with municipalities throughout Virginia to assist with resilience master planning, floodplain management and dam safety, and stormwater (MS4) permitting and engineering.  Mr. Stein served as adjunct faculty for Virginia Tech, teaching graduate courses in Urban Hydrology and Dynamic Modeling of Environmental Systems.
