Abstract: The Richmond District covers 14 counties and eight cities, encompassing 5,122 square miles of Central Virginia and serves as home to about 1.4 million people. Within the Richmond District, there are over 2,600 existing bridges and culverts, with more structures being added to this inventory as new bridges and culverts are built and come online.  Managing this inventory of structures provides challenges and opportunities for engineers to solve complex problems and contribute to the overall health and longevity of our local bridge infrastructure.  This presentation will provide an overview of the mission, responsibilities, challenges, and priorities of the Richmond District bridge program area.

Presenter: Craig Ponte, P.E. – VDOT Richmond District Bridge Engineer

Prior to joining VDOT in 2022, Mr. Ponte served as a practicing structural engineer for nearly 20 years at Richmond based consulting engineering firms on a wide variety of roadway and bridge projects throughout the U.S. Including Virginia, Washington, D.C., Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and New York.   In his current position at VDOT, he leads the bridge program in the Richmond District, including the inspection, design, and maintenance program areas.  Mr. Ponte holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Syracuse University.
