Abstract: Adam Matteo, Assistant State Bridge Engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will provide an overview of VDOT’s non-destructive testing and evaluation program. The presentation will address the technologies employed by VDOT and the intended purposes and uses of those technologies. The topics will range from more conventional NDE/NDT methods to newer technologies that VDOT is working to implement. Examples of its use on both large and small bridges will be discussed. The program will also address VDOT’s specifications and methods for procuring these services.

As the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Assistant State Structure and Bridge Engineer for Bridge Maintenance and Bridge Management, Adam is responsible for establishing policy for the maintenance of over 19,000 of Virginia’s highway bridges and large culverts. He started his career at a shipyard, performing structural analysis on submarine pressure hulls. He has 35 years of engineering experience in structural design, bridge maintenance, and construction management.
